Introducing our 2024 Champion of Change, Mariya Taher.

Mariya is a fierce advocate with nearly 15 years of experience in fighting gender-based violence. Her work spans teaching, research, policy, and activism. Mariya first connected with Asian Women's Shelter (AWS) as a volunteer in 2011, and later, we partnered with her for the first "Voices to End FGM/C (Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting) Storytelling Project," amplifying the voices of survivors. Since then, AWS has been proud to support Mariya’s integral work in empowering survivors. This year, AWS concluded a multi-year partnership that expanded services, storytelling initiatives, and training to raise awareness on FGM/C.

Mariya’s efforts have been pivotal. Her Change.org petition helped Massachusetts pass anti-FGC legislation with over 400,000 signatures, making it the 39th state to do so. She has driven similar efforts in other states and serves on the US End FGM/C Network steering committee. As an expert consultant for the Department of Justice, she continues to lead change. A Valor LEAP Fellow and prolific writer, her work has appeared in NPR, HuffPost, Brown Girl Magazine, and more. Mariya is a true Champion of Change!
